Marin Peace and Justice Coalition

The Social Justice Center of Marin operates its programs through task forces.  These working committees are the organizational structure through which we organize and take political action within our community. Below is a brief summary of the Social Justice Center of Marin’s active task forces; we invite you to participate in task force actions and meetings, or to form one of your own!

Our Peace Task Force, part of The Peace and Justice Coalition, is working on a variety of issues surrounding war and peace.  The coalition is doing outstanding work on Middle East conflicts including Iraq, Afghanistan and Israel/Palestine. Our task force is engaged in the following activities:

o       Distributing information leaflets and collecting signature for our elected representatives regarding human rights both domestically and abroad.

o       Working with the coalition to offer forums that educate the public about the basic causes of animosity towards the U.S. and about the dangers to our civil liberties posed by post-September 11 "anti-terrorism" laws.

o       Conducting a film series and  vigils/demonstrations in around Marin.

Our Media Action Marin Task Force works both on issues surrounding KPFA and the Pacifica Foundation and on issues relating to community access here in Marin.  The most recent focus here in Marin is the franchise agreement that is being negotiated by At&T (now Comcast) and the Marin Joint Powers Authority.  The Media Democracy Task Force is working to ensure that the Marin Community has access to the public airwaves, which we own.  This Task Force has recently completed their Media Democracy Bill of Rights
for Telecommunications Policy
Both areas of focus are fundamental for giving communities a voice in our corporate-controlled undemocratic media.

Our Living Wage/Full Employment Task Force promotes the right of all Americans to have jobs that pay wages adequate to support families.  After four years of hard work, the task force has succeeded in getting a living wage ordinance adopted in Marin County and continues to work with a broad coalition of groups in support of a livable and sustainable world.  This task force recently succeeded in getting a living wage ordinance passed in Fairfax and continues to bring proposals to other towns and cities in Marin.

Our Genetic Engineered Food Task Force works to oppose the reckless use of GE technology and help increase public understanding of the known and potential harmful human and environmental effects of this technology.  We work to educate members of our community about the dangers of this technology and the monopolization of the world food supply.

Our Marin General Hospital Task Force works to ensure that our own district hospital maintains the quality of care that we have come to expect.  The Task Force also works to keep Sutter Corporation from undermining our hospital’s ability to provide vital service to our community and to help regain community control of our once excellent hospital, Marin General.  For more information and a historic perspective on the fight to save our community hospital, please visit http://members.aol.com/mshcc/index.htm.

Our Anti-nuclear Task Force works with the Marin Peace Conversion Commission.  The Commission enforces Marin's Nuclear Free Zone Law, which prohibits County Government purchases of civilian products from companies involved in producing nuclear weapons.  The task force works to inform the public about various nuclear dangers and has been instrumental in involving our Congresswoman in efforts to ban nuclear weapons.

Our Worker’s Rights Task Force is currently promoting public awareness about the importance of unionization of strawberry workers to protect their right to decent wages and protection from pesticide exposure.

Our Election Reform Task Force works on issues relating to campaign finance reform, instant runoff voting (IRV) and any and all issues surrounding democratic elections.

Other issues our members are currently working on through SJCM include Globalization, Poor and Needy and Death Penalty Moratorium Task Forces.

If you are interested in getting actively involved in any of our task forces, please call the Social Justice Center of Marin at 415-454-5027.
